Natasha Barrett

Natasha Barrett is a British-Norwegian composer, installation artist and performer of electroacoustic art music. Barrett completed her Master’s Degree at the University of Birmingham, moving on to her Doctoral degree in composition at City University in London in 1998.

Whether writing for instrumental performers or electronic media her compositional aesthetics are derived from acousmatic issues focusing on the aural perception of detail, hidden sounds, structure and potential meaning. The composition and manipulation of space is a central element in much of this work, the most recent being a 43-speaker 3D higher-order ambisonics composition commissioned by ZKM in Germany.

Performed and commissioned throughout the world she has collaborated with well known ensembles, scientists and designers, electronic performance groups and festivals. Her works include sound-architecture, installations, concert works, interactivity and often incorporate the latest technologies.

Amongst her list of international recognitions is the prestigious Nordic Council Music Prize.

Her work is released on empreintes DIGITALes, Aurora, Cultures électroniques/Mnémosyne Musique Média and CDCM/Centaur and includes surround sound DVD-audio and SACD.
